In 2011 the NC Department of Transportation permanently closed the historic 1925 era Rocky Broad River Bridge on US 74 in nearby Lake Lure after having opened a new replacement bridge. Two years later, after a lot of tremendous volunteer work, the Rocky Broad River Bridge was given new life as the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge Gardens. This is likely a unique structure in all of North Carolina.
The 155 foot bridge now features a meandering pathway lined with several gardens filled with native plants and artwork by local craftsmen. It makes for a pleasant diversion while in the Lake Lure and Chimney Rock area. Read more about it in Our State Magazine by clicking here. The bridge is just about 15 to 20 minutes from the main entrance of Creston, and if you make the trip, stop off a the Esmeralda Inn for a great meal.
