Those of us who have beloved pets often find ourselves in a quandary when it comes time to leave them for an extended period. After all, they are like family but we can’t or don’t always want to take them with us on trips away from home. For those of you who have cats (sorry dog lovers), there’s a new business in Black Mountain that can help you out.
Cats Cradle of Black Mountain is a state certified boarding house operated by pet lover Donna Chainas. Donna has worked in several animal hospitals and animal shelters in the past and is a true cat lover. Upon moving to Black Mountain she created a unique boarding house specifically for feline friends. Walking in the double entry door is like walking into a
professional salon spa. At Cats Cradle, there are ten private rooms for your cat or if you have more than one, your cats, but only your cats in that particular room. Cats that don’t already know each other tend to not get along well, so there is no intermingling among the guests. This is a departure from the typical kennel in which cats and dogs are in close proximity and kept in metal cages the size of a large microwave.
Each room has a minimum of 4’ x 6’ in area and has a window and ledge for your cat to perch upon, a scratching post, bedding, water/food bowls and one or two ledges on the wall for perching. The upper portion of the doors to the rooms is screened so the guests are in clear view at all times. It’s far superior to sticking Fluffy in a steel cage for the long weekend. The floors feature radiant heat and are surfaced in easy to clean and sanitary engineered wood
laminate. (Do you have radiant heat in your house?) She even installed a special air handler to constantly circulate fresh air. The day I visited there were three guests in the “hotel”, relaxing and sunning themselves.
Cats are fed twice a day and if they need medicine, Donna can administer them including
insulin shots. She lives on the premises so she is always close at hand. Music is piped into the rooms starting at 6:00 AM until lights out at 9:30 PM. Donna will even provide valet service to pick up your cat at your home if you don’t live too far away. The rate for one cat is $20 per night and $10 per night for an additional cat in the same room. At this time, she is offering a special: three nights for the price of two. So next time you’re wanting to get away to the Caribbean or a long weekend, call Donna at 828-490-3319 and make your cat’s reservation at Cats Cradle, then enjoy that trip of a lifetime without worry. You’re kitty won’t be saying “Me Ow! She’ll say “Me Wow!”
